Cold Start Idle Delete

A software adjustment that reduces the high, noisy idle speed when the engine is started from cold.

About the service

What is it and how does it work?

When a petrol engine is started cold, it briefly runs at high RPM with retarded ignition to bring the catalytic converter up to operating temperature quickly. During this time the exhaust gets noticeably louder; especially on cars with a sport exhaust, this can be disturbing in a residential car park or narrow streets in the morning. Diesel engines also have strategies that raise the idle on a cold start; suitability is assessed per engine.

A cold start idle delete reduces the RPM flare on the first start and the loud noise that comes with it; the engine warms up at a calmer idle. The fuel enrichment and protection functions the engine needs when cold are left in place; only the high-idle strategy for catalyst heating is adjusted.

Since the catalyst heating strategy is designed to reduce cold-start emissions, this adjustment may affect emission values in the first few minutes. For this reason, like our other services that touch emission systems, we treat it as track / motorsport-focused; the original software is kept and can be restored on request.

Benefits

What do you gain?

  • A quieter idle on morning starts
  • Neighbour-friendly first start for cars with sports exhausts
  • Cold engine protection functions stay in place
  • Can be applied in one go together with other software

Process

How is it done?

  1. 01

    Step 01

The car’s cold-start behavior and exhaust setup are assessed.

  2. 02

    Step 02

The original software is backed up.

  3. 03

    Step 03

The high-idle strategy for catalyst heating is adjusted in the software.

  4. 04

    Step 04

The result is verified with a cold-engine start test.

Does a cold start idle delete harm the engine?

No. Only the high-idle strategy used to heat the catalytic converter quickly is adjusted; the fuelling and protection functions the engine needs when cold are left untouched.

Which cars is this adjustment most popular on?

It’s especially popular on petrol cars with a sports exhaust, downpipe or valved exhaust system that are started early in the morning in residential areas.
